The Embassy of Belgium in Rome handles Long Stay Visa applications to Belgium

1. Who

As a general rule, foreign nationals who wish to stay in Belgium for more than 90 days must apply for a D-visa (national long-stay visa) to the Belgian diplomatic or consular post, competent for her/his place of residence or of her/his stay abroad.

At the moment of the visa application at the Belgian embassy in Rome, the applicant must have a valid Italian/Maltese permit of stay (the renewal/request is not accepted).

Short stay in Belgium (max.90 days): A foreign national who is legally residing in Italy/Malta, can travel to Belgium for a short stay with a valid passport, issued by their country of origin, and a valid Italian/Maltese permit of stay (or valid D-visa). The renewal/request ('bollettino di rinnovo/richiesta') of the Italian/Maltese permit of stay  is not valid for travel to Belgium! In this case, they must contact the Italian/Maltese authorities for an accelerated release of the (new) Italian/Maltese permit of stay. To obtain a C-visa for Belgium, they must contact the Belgian embassy competent for their country or origin. Nationals of some third countries are exempted from the visa C obligation for travel to Belgium and can travel for a short stay with just a valid passport
